In this day of catch-and-release fishing, it's better for the fish if you don't use a net at all. But this isn't always the easiest option.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fly-fishing Wading Jackets
  • Backing/fly-fishing
  • Fishing Fly Box
  • Fishing Fly Kit
  • Fishing Vests
  • Fly-fishing Flies
  • Fly-fishing Leaders
  • Fly-fishing Lines
  • Fly-fishing Nets
  • Fly-fishing Reels
  • Fly-fishing Rods
  • Fly-fishing Vests
  • Waders
  • Wading Boots
  1. Step 1

Get a net with an aluminum frame. They are lightweight and easy to maneuver.

  2. Step 2

Choose a size that is going to accommodate the size of the largest fish you plan to catch, though most of the sizes are pretty standard.

  3. Step 3

Select a net based on the fishing situation you plan to encounter most often. Long-handled nets are more adequate for boat fishing. Teardrop shapes cut through fast water currents best and are easier to carry on your back attached to your vest.

  4. Step 4

Use a cotton or nylon bag, not plastic or monofilament. Cotton or nylon won't be abrasive to the mucus coat of the fish. Get a net with small holes so small fish won't get through them and larger fish won't get caught in them.

  5. Step 5

Think about how you'd like to carry your net. You can attach it to your vest in a variety of ways, from a clip to Velcro to spring-loaded cables that you pull out and release to retract. Try the different methods out in the shop.
