Making a piñata, dinosaur or bowl is fun, easy and economical with papier-mâché. The first step is mixing up the paste, which helps to hold all the newspaper strips together.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Gather all your materials and spread a plastic cover over your work area, including the floor.
Step2
Pour equal parts flour and water into a plastic bucket or bowl and blend with a mixing spoon. The amount you make depends on the size of the project. Two cups each of flour and water is good for a smaller project; you can always make more if you run out.
Step3
Add flour to thicken the mixture or water to thin it until you reach the desired consistency - a smooth liquid with no lumps. The paste should stick smoothly to paper strips without dripping off.
Step4
Add salt to the paste to keep it from getting moldy; add white glue for extra stickiness.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use several types of flour including all-purpose, wheat or corn.
  • You can use wallpaper paste instead of flour for a smooth application and easier cleanup. Wallpaper paste isn't as sturdy as flour paste.
  • Use plastic gloves to make cleanup easier.

on 11/22/2005 Instead of flour, try corn starch. Heat water and cornstarch in a pan stirring constantly until it starts to thicken, adding more starch or water depending on the desired consistency. Let mixture cool and dip your paper strips. This is nice on cool days.

on 11/22/2005 Liquid starch works just as well as paste. It's less work and the finished product is much lighter.
