How to Create a Frames-Based Web Page With FrontPage

Frames allow you to have several viewable Web pages in a single page. Use frames to keep the navigation bar or your logo visible at all times. You can create frames-based Web pages using FrontPage, Microsoft's WYSIWYG Web design program. This tutorial uses FrontPage 2000.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the FrontPage program and open an existing web.

    • 2

Click on the File menu and select New, then Page. A dialog box will appear.

    • 3

Click on the second tab, titled Frames, in the dialog box.

    • 4

Choose the type of frames-based page you wish to use. Click on each option once to see a preview and brief description of the page. Click OK.

    • 5

In the page box, click the Set Initial Page button to insert a page in that frame. Choose the page to be inserted in the dialog box.

    • 6

Click the New Page button to create a new page for that frame. The frame will appear blank so you can add content.

    • 7

Select Save from the File menu when finished. You'll be prompted to save any new pages created within a frame (one by one), then prompted to save the frameset itself.

    • 8

Preview the page in a Web browser by choosing Preview in Browser from the File menu. From the dialog box, choose the browser and settings to view the page.

Tips & Warnings

  • A frameset is a page that's divided into separate sections. First the main frame page loads. This main page then calls up the remaining frames, also called source URLs. Each source URL refers to a different Web page to be loaded into that frame.

  • Not all browsers are compatible with frames, and not all users like frames. Always offer an alternative page for these viewers. You can specify an alternate browser by double-clicking on the main frameset page and clicking through the steps until you reach the Alternate Page section. Click the Browse button or type the URL of the page.
