FrontPage bookmarks, also called target links, take users directly to a section on a Web page. Use these links to help users navigate your site or direct them to a specific reference. These instructions use Microsoft FrontPage 98.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Start the FrontPage program and open an existing web. (See "How to Begin a Web Site in FrontPage" if you don't know how.)

  2. Step 2

Choose Show FrontPage Editor from the Tools menu, or click on the FrontPage Editor icon on the toolbar.

  3. Step 3

Open the page you want and place the cursor right before the text or graphic you want to use as a bookmark (the place where the link will take the viewer).

  4. Step 4

Choose Bookmark from the Edit menu.

  5. Step 5

Type the name of the bookmark in the dialog box and choose OK. A box with a small flag inside it will appear; this will not be visible to the Web page viewer.

  6. Step 6

To link to the bookmark, place the cursor right before the text or graphic you want to be the link (what the user will click to go to the bookmark).

  7. Step 7

Choose Hyperlink from the Insert menu. Click on the Open Page tab and choose the bookmark from the pull-down menu. Click OK.

  8. Step 8

    Save the page when finished.

  9. Step 9

Preview the page in a Web browser by choosing Preview in Browser from the File menu. From the dialog box, choose a browser and settings to use.

  10. Step 10

Check your links before and after you upload the page to the Internet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use bookmarks sparingly. Visitors don't want to click on a bookmark and be taken to a link two lines down.
  • Links to Web sites that are also bookmarks will show up in the FrontPage editor as being underlined by dashes. This will not be visible to viewers.
