Skating allows skiers to zip through flat sections. Just use your legs to propel you, rather than using your poles to push off.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ski Hats
  • Ski Boots
  • Ski Gloves
  • Ski Goggles
  • Ski Jackets
  • Ski Pants
  • Ski Poles
  • Skis
  1. Step 1

Realize that you won't have enough speed to clear an approaching flat section, even if you're coming off a steep slope.

  2. Step 2

Begin skating before you stop if possible. The initial push is much easier with a little momentum.

  3. Step 3

Maintain a stance with your feet and skis shoulder width apart.

  4. Step 4

Plant your poles slightly ahead of your boots.

  5. Step 5

Push off with the inside edge of your right ski. Use the poles to increase your momentum. This motion will cause you to veer left.

  6. Step 6

    Plant your poles again.

  7. Step 7

Push off with the inside edge of your left ski. Now you'll be moving to the right. As you skate, the tails of your skis will converge while your tips open up in a V shape.

  8. Step 8

Continue skating until you have enough speed to glide through the flat section.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also skate uphill if needed.
  • Once you've mastered the timing of skating, you can eliminate the need for poling when skating. Strong pushes from inside edge to inside edge will keep you moving.
  • Skiing is a physically demanding sport that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
