How to Loosen Up Your Upper Body Before Skiing

There's a direct correlation between how relaxed you are and how well you ski. Use this stretch to loosen your torso before you hit the slopes.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ski Boots
  • Ski Clothing
  • Ski Equipment
  1. Step 1

    Stand with your feet shoulder width apart.

  2. Step 2

    Place both hands on your hips.

  3. Step 3

    Begin by leaning to your right, remembering to keep your feet planted.

  4. Step 4

    Reach your left arm over your head, so that your elbow rests close to the top of your head.

  5. Step 5

    Reach beyond your right shoulder. As you lean to the side, the bottom of your rib cage will come close to reaching your hip bone.

  6. Step 6

    Hold this position for 8 to 10 seconds.

  7. Step 7

    Repeat in the opposite direction.

  8. Step 8

    Stretch several times on each side.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can increase the effectiveness of this stretch by simply reaching for a point beyond your shoulder.
  • The muscles you're stretching are the latissimus dorsi, or "lats."
