How to Emergency Dismount From a Horse

Following the steps below will get you out of the saddle in a big hurry, pilgrim.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Take both reins into your left hand.

  2. Step 2

    Place both hands on the horse's neck.

  3. Step 3

    Swing your upper body forward and your legs back, getting your feet back and out of the stirrups.

  4. Step 4

    Kick your right leg up and over the horse's rump.

  5. Step 5

    Try to maintain contact with the reins, but be careful not to pull.

  6. Step 6

    Jump to the ground, bringing your feet together before impact.

  7. Step 7

    Land on the balls of your feet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try not to slide off on your belly. Use your hands for leverage.
  • Soften your knees and ankles when you land to absorb the shock.
  • Learn to do this when the horse is at a standstill and later when at a walk and a trot.
  • Avoid riding alone in case of emergency.
  • Always wear a riding helmet and proper riding boots when you ride.

on 8/8/2006 Remember that in an emergency you still have the horse to worry about. Don't just drop the reins and let your horse get out of control. Hold the reins and dismount in the proper manner. Don't scream or hold on with your legs, doing this tells the horse to go faster.
