How to Bury Your Rail on a Cutback in Shortboarding

"There's nothing sweeter than a huge cutback where you bury your rail and chuck loads of spray. Occy [world champ Mark Occilupo] does that better than anyone," says Timmy Reyes, O'Neill Surf Team rider.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Pump for speed down the line.

  2. Step 2

    Set up for your turn as you get out of the pocket and into the open face of the wave.

  3. Step 3

    Lower your center of gravity and lean into your cutback.

  4. Step 4

    Apply equal pressure to your front and back feet.

  5. Step 5

    Tuck in your back knee.

  6. Step 6

    Use your arms to balance your body and project you through the turn.

  7. Step 7

    Pressure your back foot and the tail of your board if your nose digs in too deep.

Tips & Warnings
  • "You have to want to thrash - even hurt - the wave when you try to bury your rail. You have to hit it fast and hard," says Timmy.
  • Speed is crucial for you to complete the turn. Lose your momentum and you'll catch your rail and likely fall.
  • Surfing is a physically demanding sport that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek the proper training and equipment before undertaking this activity.
