"I think of pumping the wave for speed as a ton of tiny bottom turns," says Timmy Reyes, O'Neill Surf Team rider, "but instead of being at the bottom of the wave you're up high on the face. Wait. Now that I think about it, it's not like a bottom turn at all."

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Hop to your feet quickly and angle your board across and down the face of the wave.

  2. Step 2

Shift your feet farther forward on the board to take weight off the tail and accelerate.

  3. Step 3

Bend your knees as you carve a slight arc, just enough to angle back up the face.

  4. Step 4

Extend your legs and unweight your board so you rise up the face.

  5. Step 5

Set your rail again by pressing down with your toes if you're going frontside, or with your heels if you're going backside.

  6. Step 6

Allow your board to drop down the face again to accelerate.

  7. Step 7

Stay in the steep part of the face at all times.

Tips & Warnings
  • "If you can get speed going down the line you can do just about any maneuver," says Reyes.
