How to Board a Helicopter for Heli-Skiing

Climbing into a helicopter in deep powder with heavy boots on can be a challenge ' even for the pros.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ski Boots
  • Ski Clothing
  • Ski Goggles
  1. Step 1

    Wait until your guide or pilot gives you the OK to board.

  2. Step 2

    Open the helicopter door. Be gentle - they're designed to be lightweight.

  3. Step 3

    Grab the seat with one hand and a handle (usually conveniently located within reach) with your other.

  4. Step 4

    Put one foot on the step and the other on the flooring inside the helicopter.

  5. Step 5

    Lunge forward and lift your lower foot high so it doesn't kick the outside of the helicopter.

  6. Step 6

    Sit in the farthest seat from the door to allow others to enter and sit after you.

  7. Step 7

    Buckle your seatbelt immediately.

Tips & Warnings
  • Kicking your boots on the skids or on the side of the helicopter may be a good way to get them free of snow, but it doesn't exactly endear you to the pilot.
  • Opening the door for others is a nice gesture, as is giving them a hand in or helping them find their seatbelt.
  • Fooling around while you or others are boarding a helicopter is stupid and dangerous.
