The best ' and safest ' area to ski is where your guide tells you to go. But, every now and then, you're allowed some freedom. Here are some tips to help you find that choice line where you can make your tracks.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ski Boots
  • Skis
  1. Step 1

Treat yourself to fresh powder. Follow the general path of your group, but by all means, make your own tracks.

  2. Step 2

Ski or snowboard along the fall line. Otherwise, you may end up in a gully and away from your group's next meeting spot.

  3. Step 3

Look for the big areas of white when you are in the trees and aim for those. If you only look at the tree in front of you, you will most definitely run into it.

  4. Step 4

Give yourself plenty of distance from trees that might be hiding a tree well.

  5. Step 5

Follow the rule that says, "If you can't see it, don't ski it."

  6. Step 6

Jump, if you're so inclined. Keep an eye out for boulders, rolls or tree stumps that provide a good launching pad and a smooth landing.

  7. Step 7

Stay out of the flats. In deep powder, you might find yourself struggling to maintain speed.

  8. Step 8

Take advantage of natural features. Enjoy berms, banks, lips, fallen logs, chutes and bowls.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make symmetrical tracks when your group decides it would be fun to do so, but don't let that limit your freedom - bust loose once in a while.
  • Never leave your buddy or lose contact with your group and guide.
