How to Perform a Knee Strike in Karate

The knee strike, also known as a knee smash, is effective for in-close fighting. A straight knee strike to the face is an unexpected and powerful surprise.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Uniforms
  • Martial Arts Videos
  1. Step 1

    Face forward with your feet about shoulders' width apart.

  2. Step 2

    Step forward on one leg with your knee bent. Keep your back leg straight. (You're now in front stance.)

  3. Step 3

    Swing the rear leg forward and bend your knee to a 90-degree angle.

  4. Step 4

    Drive the knee directly into the target, using the hips and standing leg as leverage to deliver more power with the strike.

  5. Step 5

    Return your striking leg to its original position.

Tips & Warnings
  • The knee strike is useful when you are too close to an attacker to perform a kick effectively.
  • To increase the power of your strike, pull the target toward you while driving your knee into him or her.
  • Practicing the martial arts is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
