The vertical knee strike is a powerful self-defense technique for close-in fighting. Pulling down on an attacker's head while thrusting the knee upward can immobilize an attacker long enough for an escape.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Uniforms
  • Martial Arts Videos

Step1
Face forward with one leg ahead of the other. Bend the forward knee at a 90-degree angle. The back leg is kept straight; both heels touch the floor. Keep your legs about a shoulders' width apart (front stance).
Step2
Keep your fists in front of you to guard your midsection.
Step3
Lift the back leg and bend the knee 90 degrees, shifting your weight to the front, supporting leg. Aim your knee at the target.
Step4
Drive the knee directly into the target. If aiming for a high target, grab the attacker's head and pull it down toward your knee as you strike forward.
Step5
Recoil your knee back to the original position immediately after the strike.

Tips & Warnings

  • Move your hips forward as you strike with the knee to drive the strength of your standing leg into the strike.
  • Only use the knee strike when you are too close for an extended kick.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.
