Legend has it that Saint Nicholas once dropped a few coins down the chimney of the home of three poor sisters. The coins would have been lost in the ashes if they hadn't landed neatly in the stockings left to dry by the hearth. Hoping for similar fortune, we leave our stockings there too. Here are some ideas for hanging your stockings with care.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Bows
  • Stocking Hangers
  • Christmas Garlands
  • Christmas Stockings
  • Clothespins
  • Wire Twists
  • Staples
  • Thumbtacks
  • Hammers
  • Small Common Nails
  • Staple Guns
Step1
Find some pretty brass or ceramic stocking hangers that sit on the mantel for the easiest and quickest way to hang stockings. Hook the loop on the stocking over the hanger.
Step2
String a garland across the mantel and secure the ends well with thumbtacks or staples. Then clothespin your stockings to the garland. (Be aware that the garland probably won't bear much weight and the stockings should be empty while hanging.)
Step3
Hammer small nails gently into the mantel and hang your stockings directly onto the nails. Hide the nails with garland or sprigs of mistletoe.
Step4
Use small wire twists or pretty bows to tie your stockings to a rail or banister if you don't have a fireplace.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do hang your stockings with care - you don't want them catching fire from the fireplace, nearby candles or Christmas lights on the mantel.
  • Reconsider the brass or ceramic stocking holders if you have small children. If a child pulls on the stocking, the heavy holders may come crashing down, causing injury.

on 11/22/2005 If you have several stockings and limited space for hanging them, take a 2"X2" piece of wood (length determined by number of stockings you have), then anchor it onto a base. Drill a slanted hole into the 2X2 for each stocking (alternating the placement) equal to the size of a short piece of dowel. Paint the stand; hang the stockings on it. This can then be placed anywhere, and moved around. The finished result will be similar to a mug tree.
