Water conducts electricity, and no one wants water in an electrical circuit. Sophisticated solid-state electronics in a radio-controlled model's "radio box" must be sealed to keep out moisture.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plastic Wrap
  • Plastic Wrap
  • Waterproof Tape
  • Waxed Paper
  • Waxed Paper
  • R/C model engines - OS, SuperTigre, and Cox
  • modeler's tools and supplies - batteries, silicone sealant, Excel Knife & Tool Set, A470 Airbrush, adhesives & lubricants
  • R/C Modeling Construction & Operating Publications
  • Model Aviation Subscription
  • R/C model airplanes - Top Flite, Cox, GPM, and Hobbico
  • Silicone Sealants
  • Facial Tissues
  1. Step 1

Check the radio box that came with your radio-controlled (R/C) model.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the radio box has not been damaged.

  3. Step 3

Check the cover of the radio box to ensure that it fits properly.

  4. Step 4

    Remove the cover.

  5. Step 5

Spread a bead of silicone sealant around the top edge of the radio box.

  6. Step 6

Use an ample amount of sealant.

  7. Step 7

Keep the bead smooth and uniform.

  8. Step 8

Cover the top of box with waxed paper or plastic wrap before the sealant hardens.

  9. Step 9

Replace the radio box cover as if closing the box.

  10. Step 10

    Allow the sealant to harden.

  11. Step 11

Remove the cover and remove the paper. The box will have an edge that conforms exactly to the dimensions and contour of its lid.

  12. Step 12

Place facial tissue in empty spaces to absorb moisture and condensation, then close the box.

  13. Step 13

Finish making the radio box water-resistant with waterproof tape by neatly covering the line where the cover meets the box itself.

Tips & Warnings
  • When the unit is not in use, remove the tissue and open the radio box cover to allow the enclosure to air out.
  • Always dry water-contaminated components before attempting an R/C flight.
  • Youngsters need supervision when R/C model aircraft are flying.
