Step1
Understand that pop-up books are books that have part of the pages that stand up when you open a page or have parts that move when you pull a tab.
Step2
Know that pop-up books are a great way to get a child interested in books. They bring an element of surprise and excitement that regular books cannot provide.
Step3
Look for pop-up books that are sturdy and made of thick paper. Books made of thin paper do not last as long.
Step4
Try to look through the book before you purchase it. Many of these books are sold encased in plastic so they will not be damaged in the store. You want to look through the book to be sure that it pops up on each page. Some books only pop up in the center or every other page and are not as exciting. Examine the book for signs of damage or wear. Some stores have a display copy you can look through and have sale copies that are plastic covered for purchase.
Step5
Realize that there are pop-up books for most holidays and events. There are many beautiful Christams pop-ups. There are even pop-up books about potty training.
Step6
Try to find pop-up books with your child's favorite character. Most popular book and TV characters have pop-up books.
Step7
Plan to spend more for a pop-up book than you would for a regular book. Most pop-ups are hardcovers and are priced above the expected price for regular hardcover books.
Step8
Go to your local bookstore and look at the selection of pop-up books. If you find one you like, you can order it from an online bookseller for a reduced price. When you buy online, you don't have to worry that the book has been abused by other browsers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Teach your child to be gentle with pop-up books. Too much pulling and tugging can ruin the book.
  • Don't expect it to last forever. Generally pop-up books only last through one child's childhood.
  • Robert Sabuda is a pop-up artist. He has many pop-up books that are absolutely incredible. Try one of his books if you don't know where else to start.
