How to Handle a Small Powerboat in a Following Sea

When the waves are heading in the same direction you are, you'd better watch your back.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Proceed in the direction of the waves.

  2. Step 2

    Adjust your speed to avoid having waves break over the stern - in other words, go at least as fast as the waves.

  3. Step 3

    Ensure all passengers are wearing their personal flotation devices.

  4. Step 4

    Secure all movable gear.

  5. Step 5

    Move passengers back from the bow without overweighing the stern.

  6. Step 6

    Distribute passenger weight evenly from side to side.

  7. Step 7

    Experiment with course changes and crew weight distribution to minimize the rocking motion.

  8. Step 8

    Activate the bilge pump or bail immediately if water accumulates in the bilge.

  9. Step 9

    Adjust your speed to match changing conditions.

Tips & Warnings
  • Going over the crest of a wave may be inadvisable in cases where the boat is significantly smaller then the waves.
