How to Sail out of a Slip

A slip is home to your boat. The security of the surrounding docks makes it a safe haven while the boat is not in use. That same security makes it difficult to leave the slip under sail. Here's how to accomplish it correctly.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Position the boat so the bow points into the wind if possible. This method will only work in a leeward slip.

  2. Step 2

Raise the jib and the mainsail allowing them to luff (see Related eHows).

  3. Step 3

    Release the spring lines.

  4. Step 4

Release both dock lines on the side of the boat closest to open water.

  5. Step 5

Station a crew member on the bow and one at the stern.

  6. Step 6

    Untie both remaining dock lines.

  7. Step 7

Loop each dock line once around its cleat and hand the end to the deck crew.

  8. Step 8

    Board the boat.

  9. Step 9

Keep enough tension on the lines to avoid moving the boat.

  10. Step 10

Have someone grasp the boom from the upwind side firmly and force it to catch the wind by pushing it toward the side of the boat farthest from open water.

  11. Step 11

Instruct the crew to release both dock lines.

  12. Step 12

Station a crew member with a fender on the side nearest open water.

  13. Step 13

Release the boom slowly as the boat begins to move backward. Control the movement of the boom with the main sheet.

  14. Step 14

Steer the boat's stern away from open water.

  15. Step 15

Sheet in the mainsail when the bow points toward open water. Make sure you aren't too close to anything on the leeward side. Steering will have no effect until the boat moves again and you may drift.

  16. Step 16

Sheet in the jib and the boat will be under way.

Tips & Warnings
  • This is a tricky maneuver that should be rehearsed prior to attempting it. Make sure crew members know their jobs.
  • It's very important that the crew member be on the upwind side of the boom while filling the sail with wind. Once the boat leaves the dock, the boom will swing across the deck.
  • All members of the crew should wear life jackets when docking or sailing on open water.
