on 8/8/2006 It takes 8 years of college to become an optometrist. 4 years to get a bachelors, and 4 to get a Doctor of Optometry degree. Very few students may get offered early admission after applying to optometry school with 3 years of undergraduate course work including excelling in all the prerequisites. Additionally, it is generally required to pass all 3 parts of the National Board exam totaling 36 hours of testing in addition to specific state board requirements.
