The competition is intense for jobs as attorneys. Annual salaries for new law firm associates range from approximately $46,000 to $110,000, depending on the size of the firm and its geographic location. To be a partner in a law firm ' the goal of many attorneys ' means commanding an even higher income. Solo practitioners, however, often have trouble making ends meet during the early years.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Understand that a law firm may hire you straight out of law school, well before you take the bar exam. A relatively low salary may reflect your initial status.
Step2
Decide if you are in this field for the money and prestige or to help people with legal problems. Law partners make much more than public servants or solo practitioners.
Step3
Realize that attorneys can have trouble finding employment. Legal temp firms provide employment, but benefits are often not part of a temp's job.
Step4
Research legal association Web sites for current information about the field. A search engine like Google or Yahoo! is a great place to start.

Tips & Warnings

  • Become proficient in legal computer programs to increase your chances of being hired.
  • An attorney can work thousands of hours per year, especially attorneys on the partner track.
