Rock climbing isn't for the faint-hearted. If you have what it takes to both physically and mentally scale the mountain, here's how to start learning the basics.
Choose your instructor carefully. You'll initially be totally dependent on his or her skill. If you go with a friend, be sure that friend truly knows what he or she is talking about.
Step2
Read about climbing before and after your initial experiences. Read all the climbing how-to books that you can get your hands on. There is much to learn and no single book has it all.
Step3
Watch other climbers - beginners and experts - to see what you can learn from their actions.
Step4
Ask questions. Ask other climbers why and how they do things when you see a technique you don't understand.
Step5
Read the climbing magazines. "Climbing" and "Rock & Ice" both have technique sections useful to climbers of all skills. Remember, education is a continuing process; always try to learn.
Tips & Warnings
Don't be in a hurry to shoot up the difficulty ratings. Build a solid base of climbing knowledge. A strong foundation will eventually allow you to rise to a greater height.
Rock climbing is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
