The purpose of a regular skin self-exam is to become familiar with markings on your body. This can help you be alert to changes that might indicate the form of skin cancer known as melanoma. These guidelines follow the recommendations of the American Cancer Society.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Examine your body with an eye to changes in the size, shape and color of moles, blemishes and birthmarks.
Step2
Start by examining yourself in front of a full-length mirror. Check your body front and back, then raise your arms and check your right and left sides.
Step3
Check the back of your neck and your scalp. To do this, stand with your back to a full-length mirror, part your hair and lift it, and hold a hand mirror up to your head.
Step4
Study your arms and hands. Bend your elbows and check your forearms, upper arms, underarms and palms.
Step5
Examine your legs and feet. Sit down to check the backs of your legs and the soles of your feet, as well as the spaces between your toes.

Tips & Warnings

  • The best time to do a skin self-exam is just after a shower or bath.
  • Call your physician if you note any unusual changes in your skin.
