How to Set Hyphenation Rules in PageMaker

PageMaker 6.0 and 6.5 allow you to set hyphenation rules for your document, including where to break words, when to hyphenate and so on. You can also specify how many lines in a row can end with a hyphenated word - especially helpful for the aesthetics of a page.

Instructions

      Go to the Type menu and select Hyphenation.

      Click On to turn on hyphenation for all paragraphs in your document.

      Select "Manual plus dictionary" so that PageMaker will use its spelling dictionary to check hyphenation and will only consult you if it cannot decide hyphenation for a particular word.

      Change the hyphenation zone from the 0.5-inch default value to increase or decrease the number of hyphenated words.

      Select Add to access PageMaker's dictionary and tell it how to hyphenate a specific word.

      Click OK when you are finished setting hyphenation.

  • Hyphenation is off by default.
