How to Adjust Text Leading in PageMaker Documents

Leading is the space between lines of text in a document. PageMaker 6.0 and 6.5 let you adjust the text leading in your documents. Leading is pronounced "led-ing;" it's called that because typesetters used to space lines by inserting lead strips between them.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • PageMaker 6.5 (Mac OS)
  • PageMaker 6.5 (Windows)

Step1
Select the text for which you want to change the leading.
Step2
Go to the Type menu and select Leading.
Step3
Select one of the choices in the drop-down menu.
Step4
Select Auto to let the software select the leading for you.
Step5
Select one of the numbers if you want a specific amount of leading.
Step6
Be more specific by selecting Other and typing in the number for the amount of leading you want.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test two or more amounts of leading to make sure you select one that works well in the document.
  • Too much space between lines can make text more difficult to read.
  • Too little space between lines can make text almost impossible to read. If you want to squeeze a little bit more text on a page, though, you can adjust the leading a touch to get it in.
