"In all sports there's a line not to cross," says Nevada district judge and pro-boxing referee Judge Mills Lane. "I run a tight ship. Those who break the rules pay the consequences. I want a good clean fight. You know, 'Let's get it on!'"

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Inform boxers of what is and isn't acceptable before the fight begins.

  2. Step 2

Warn the boxers at the first sight of any illegal punches, holds, head-butting, or in this case'biting. "Tyson was upset because he was cut by a Holyfield head-butt. I don't think it was intentional. But frustration is not an excuse for cannibalism. That's a good way to get DQ'd," says Lane.

  3. Step 3

Deduct points from boxers who break the rules after proper warning.

  4. Step 4

Call time-out to explain your warnings and point deductions to the boxers and their teams.

  5. Step 5

Pull the plug on the fight if it gets out of hand and stand by your decision.

on 11/22/2005 Make sure the fighter understands you. At a young age (minimum age for amateurs is 8) the boxers may not understand your signal. Under USA boxing (amateur) rules, the referee is not supposed to use verbal language other than "stop" "box" or "break".

I break that rule all the time when I ref youth. I will accompany my signal with a very short verbal explanation.

For example, take a low blow foul. I would give the signal (point to groin) and say to the boxer "Watch the low shots" or something to that effect.
