"Any judge who tells you he or she always knows when someone is lying, is lying himself," says Nevada state judge and TV star, Judge Mills Lane. Nevertheless, there are ways to follow up on your suspicions.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Watch the person's demeanor as they sit next to their counsel or are on the stand.

  2. Step 2

    Look for strange behavior like nervousness, weird hand movements and shifty eyes.

  3. Step 3

    Ask a series of questions that get at the facts. Rephrase the questions in different ways to see if the answers are consistent or skewed.

  4. Step 4

    Take what you know to be the facts and work from those to draw conclusions.

  • "I get a basic feel, then I head in one direction and test the person to see if he's on the level," says Lane.
