Things You'll Need:

  • Fleece Jackets
  • Hooded Jackets
  • Parkas
  • Running Jackets
  • Thermal Underwear
  • Waterproof Jackets
  • Heavy-duty Rain Ponchos
  • Hiking Shell
  • Ski Jackets
  • Waterproof jackets
  1. Step 1

Consider the following when determining the "weight" you'll need: Is this an insulating layer or a protective outer layer? How cold will the conditions be where you're most likely to need warm upper wear? Are you usually warmer or colder than other people? Manufacturers give all kinds of recommendations for the various uses of their clothing, but no two people are the same.

  2. Step 2

Look for blends of synthetic materials such as Lycra, polyester or spandex. These materials will hold their shapes longer and will keep you warmer than will nylon or natural fibers such as silk.

  3. Step 3

Get a top with "moisture-wicking capability," which draws moisture away from your skin, keeping you warm and comfortable.

  4. Step 4

Consider getting upper wear that is designed specifically as thermal underwear. It will wick away moisture better and will keep you warmer than will Lycra or nylon workout clothing.

  5. Step 5

Make sure your upper wear is tight-fitting if you'll be wearing it alone or as an insulating layer. This will allow you both to stay warm and cool down more efficiently. Even expensive expedition-weight tops won't keep you warm enough if they don't fit close to the skin.

  6. Step 6

Find materials that are easy to care for, meaning those that are machine-washable and, preferably, machine-dryable.
