How to Create a Microsoft Access Field for Currency

Use a currency field instead of a number field if your data involves money or if you require a high degree of accuracy in the calculations. These instuctions are for Microsoft Access 97.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Open your table in Design view.

  2. Step 2

    Put your cursor in the row beneath the location that is to contain your new currency field. If you want to add the field at the end, click in the bottom row.

  3. Step 3

    Click on the Insert Row icon in the toolbar, or open the Insert menu and choose Row. A new row appears.

  4. Step 4

    Click in Field Name. Name your new field.

  5. Step 5

    Click in the datatype column to the immediate right of your new field. An arrow appears.

  6. Step 6

    Click in the arrow to produce a menu selection of datatypes.

  7. Step 7

    Select Currency.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the Character Map (Start Menu - Accessories -- Systems Tools -- Character Map) to insert currency symbols that don't appear in the database.
  • Use Field Properties to format the display.
