The original Lego Technic set was called the Expert Builder Set. First introduced in 1977, 107 different sets have been released. Here are some of the current ones, made for all ability levels.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lego Technic Air Enforcers
  • Lego Technic Cyber Slam Cyber Stingers
  • Lego Technic Cyber Slam Scorpion Attacks
  • Lego Technic Hydro Racers
  • Lego Technic Indy Storms
  • Lego Technic Sonic Cycles
  • Lego Technic Starter Beach Busters
  • Lego Technic Throwbots
  1. Step 1

Grab the three-piece Lego Technic Team ($7) to run your Technic creations.

  2. Step 2

Collect the Throwbots ($7). These guys shoot discs and you can build them according to the instructions or modify them to your own specs. The series includes Electro, Turbo, Ski, Torch, Scuba, Granite, and others.

  3. Step 3

Find sets from the Starter series to get you going. The Technic Starter Beach Buster police buggy ($20) is fairly easy to build, has fewer pieces than some of the advanced models, and comes with complete instructions. If you like those big tires, try the Mud Masher hot rod ($18)- it's made for off-road excursions with its oversized tires.

  4. Step 4

Build your choice of vehicles with the parts from the Technic Tech Play System Spy Runner ($10).

  5. Step 5

Pick up sets from the Cybermaster series: The Technic Cyber Slam Cyber Stinger ($40) or Technic Cyber Slam Scorpion Attack ($16) make for insect-related fun.

  6. Step 6

Scoot the Sonic Cycle ($9) over rough terrain. This bike has shock absorbers and big, bumpy tires. Or jump in the water with a Hydro Racer ($4) hydroplane.

  7. Step 7

Get yourself a 9V Power Pack Motor ($40), which includes a motor, battery box, belts, four wheels, and gears so you can make your Technics move. You can use it on sets such as the Technic Air Enforcer helicopter ($35) or the Indy Storm ($40), a 440-piece race car kit.

  8. Step 8

Drive your Tech Build Mountain Rambler ($30) around anywhere. This beast has wheels on the front and tracks on the back.

  9. Step 9

Graduate to bigger and better toys, collecting goodies such as the Code Pilot ' an accessory that allows you to scan barcodes to control a vehicle's speed and direction by remote.

Tips & Warnings
  • Lego Technics are made for ages 7 to 14. Some kits are designed for older kids, so be sure to check the box before you buy.
