There is no need to go out for take-away when you can easily create delicious brioche burgers at home. These burgers are the ultimate comfort food -- a patty that is juicy and full of flavor inside a golden bun. While this recipe uses homemade brioche rolls and beef hamburger patties, you can purchase both items pre-made if you are short on time. You can also tweak the recipe by playing around with your favorite toppings.
Things You'll Need
- 3 large brown onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 4 beef hamburger patties
- 4 brioche bread rolls
- 4 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 4 slices of cheddar cheese
- 4 slices of red tomato
- 1 cup arugula (rocket) or lettuce leaves of choice
- 4 wooden skewers fitted with 4 small pickles (optional)
You can often find soft, spongy brioche hamburger buns or bread rolls at your grocery store, but feel free to make them yourself if you have the time.
And while you can definitely purchase your own hamburger patties, the ones you make yourself are always the best. You know what goes in them, and you can customize the seasonings to your taste.
Step 1: Caramelize the Onions
Heat the oil in a medium nonstick frying pan over low heat. Add the onions and a good pinch of salt, and cook slowly for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring often.
When the onions have softened and are golden, stir in the brown sugar and balsamic vinegar. Continue to cook over low heat for another 5 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until caramelized. Set aside until required.
Alternatively, if you are short on time, use 1/2 cup of store-bought caramelized onion relish.
Step 2: Fry the Patties
Reheat the frying pan and cook the beef hamburger patties for 4 to 6 minutes on each side or until just cooked through, as directed in How to Make Hamburger Patties. Set aside until required.
Step 3: Assemble the Burgers
Halve and then toast the brioche rolls.
Put the top and bottom of one brioche roll on each plate.
Spread the bases of each roll with 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard.
Place the cooked beef hamburger patty on the bun.
Top each with a slice of cheese, which will melt slightly.
Divide the caramelized onions between the burgers.
Add a slice of red tomato to each burger.
Finish with the arugula or salad leaves of choice.
Sandwich each burger with their brioche bun tops and, if desired, insert a wooden skewer speared with a pickle to hold the burger's shape.
Be creative with your brioche burger! Other delicious accompaniments can include: ketchup or barbecue sauce, pickles, sliced avocado, bacon, sliced pineapple, savory jams or relishes.
