How to Do Defragmentation As an Administrator

Defragmenting redistributes the data on your hard drives so your computer can run more efficiently. The name of the tool was changed from Disk Defragmenter to Optimize Drives after Windows 7, but it still performs the same task. Windows automatically defragments your hard drives once a week, but you also can launch the process manually. Defragmenting involves rearranging data, so you must have administrator rights to run the tool.

  • Open the Charms bar and type “Defragment” in the Search box.

  • Right-click the “Defragment and optimize your drives” icon and select “Run as administrator” from the menu.

  • Enter the administrator password, if prompted.

  • Click the drive you want to defragment, and then click the “Optimize” button to start the defragmentation.

  • Click the “Close” button once the process is complete.
