Backing up the contents of your mobile devices helps to prevent against catastrophic data loss, should something go wrong in the future. If you have an iPhone, take advantage of Apple's free iTunes software to save everything on the iPhone to your computer. This is done via the Back Up Now feature. Should you lose data in the future, you can use iTunes to restore it too.
Launch iTunes on your computer. If you don't have iTunes, download and install it on the computer (link in Resources). ITunes is a free download from Apple's website. It is available for Windows and Mac.
Connect the iPhone to the computer using the iPhone's USB cable. The attached photo shows a USB connection, which is the end of the provided cable you connect to your computer.
Select your iPhone on the Devices menu in iTunes. In iTunes 11, the Devices menu has been moved to the far right end of the horizontal menu bar. If only one device is connected, all you need to do is click the name of your device. If multiple devices are connected, click the Devices pull-down menu.
Click the "Summary" tab. The Summary tab is located at the far left end of the horizontal menu bar, just to the left of the Info tab. Clicking the Summary tab displays a host of information about your iPhone, including how it connects, how it syncs and how it backs up information.
Click the "Back Up Now" button located under the Manually Back Up And Restore heading. When you click this button, the contents of your iPhone will be saved to your computer.
Tips & Warnings
- To verify that the backup procedure was a success, open the Preferences window and click the "Devices" tab. Backups saved on your computer are displayed under the Device Backups heading.
