How to Connect iHome to a MacBook

Save

While iHome speakers and docking systems are primarily marketed towards iOS devices such as the iPhone or iPad, if you have an Apple computer like the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, you can use the same technology to stream sound from your computer. Depending on which model you have, iHome speakers can be connected to a MacBook with AirPlay over Wi-Fi, with a 3.5-inch audio cable or by pairing the speaker with your MacBook using Bluetooth.

Connecting Via AirPlay

  • Ensure that the iHome speaker supports AirPlay and that it is connected to the Wi-Fi network. On some models, such as the iW1, you can press the AirPlay button on the speaker. On other models, such as the iW4, you may need to configure AirPlay by connecting an iOS device like an iPhone or iPod Touch to the iHome dock

  • Connect the MacBook to the same Wi-Fi network as the iHome speaker. You can choose a Wi-Fi network by clicking the "Wi-Fi" icon.

  • Launch iTunes on the MacBook. Click the "AirPlay" button located beside the iTunes volume control slider. Select the iHome speaker from the drop-down menu that opens. When you play audio or video in iTunes, the audio streams to the iHome speaker.

Connecting Via Audio Cable

  • Connect one end of a 3.5 mm audio cable into the "Aux" port on the iHome speaker. On most models, it is located in the back or the side. Insert the other end of the audio cable into the "Headphone" jack on a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro.

  • Turn on the iHome speaker and put it into Auxiliary mode by pressing the the "Mode" or "Aux" button. On some models, the speaker will automatically detect a signal through the Aux port.

  • Turn down the volume on the MacBook and launch any application that plays audio. Adjust the volume as needed.

Connecting Via Bluetooth

  • Turn on your MacBook's Bluetooth by clicking the "Bluetooth" icon (check your iHome user manual to see if your device supports Bluetooth). Select "Turn Bluetooth On" and then "Browse Device." If the icon isn't there, launch "System Preferences" from the Apple menu and select "Bluetooth."

  • Turn on Bluetooth by following the instructions on the iHome speaker. For example, on the iBT24, move the power switch to the "On" position until you see a rapidly flashing blue light. Release the "Power" button.

  • Select the iHome speaker from the list of available Bluetooth devices on the MacBook. Type "1234" on the keyboard to pair the iHome speaker with the MacBook.
