How to Hard Reset Galaxy Tablets

Hard reset your Samsung Galaxy tablet to remove applications and personal accounts from the device. When you perform a hard reset, also known as a factory data reset, the tablet reverts to the original factory software and settings. A hard reset can repair issues such as frozen screens or hanging applications by restoring original operating system files and removing problematic software. After you perform a hard reset, you will be required to reconfigure the tablet using the Setup Wizard as if it were a new device.

From Settings Menu

  • Press the “Menu” key from the home screen on the Samsung Galaxy tablet.

  • Tap the “Settings” option to open the Settings menu.

  • Tap the “Privacy” option. The Privacy Settings menu opens.

  • Tap the “Factory Data Reset” option. The Reset Tablet message displays.

  • Tap “Reset Tablet.” The password prompt displays.

  • Type the password for the device in the "Password" dialog box. The default password for the Samsung Galaxy tablet is “0000.”

  • Tap “Reset Tablet” once again. The tablet is restored to factory default settings.

Using Hardware Keys

  • Press and hold the “Power” button, and then tap “Power Off.” Tap “OK” to power down the Galaxy tablet.

  • Press and hold the “Volume Up” key.

  • Press and hold the “Power” key while pressing “Volume Up” until the Samsung Galaxy logo appears on the screen.

  • Release the “Power” button when you see the Samsung Galaxy logo. The Android logo displays.

  • Release the “Volume Up” key when the Android logo displays. The Android Recovery menu displays.

  • Press “Volume Down” to move to the “Wipe Data/Factory Reset” option. Press the “Power” key to select the option.

  • Press “Volume Down” to move to the “Yes -- Delete All User Data” option, and then press the “Power” button. The hard reset is executed on the device. When the reset is complete, the Reboot System Now option is highlighted on the screen.

  • Press the “Power” key with the Reboot System Now option highlighted. The tablet reboots. When the device turns back on, the original software and settings are restored.

Tips & Warnings

  • A soft reset, performed by simply powering the device off and back on, will often fix issues with the tablet. Attempt to restore the tab to full functionality with a soft reset before deleting all of your data with a hard reset. Press and hold the “Power” button, and then tap “Power Off.” Tap “OK” at the prompt to turn the tablet off. Press the “Power” button to restart the tab.
