How to Change the Text Message Box Colors on a Motorola Photon

Save

The Motorola Photon 4G is for users that send a lot of texts and emails. Unlike many modern smartphones, the Photon includes a slide-out, full-QWERTY keyboard that resembles the one you use with your computer – albeit much smaller. While Motorola designed the Photon for high-volume email and text users, one feature the company did not include with the phone was the ability to change text message box or bubble colors. Nevertheless, you can customize your message screens on a Photon by downloading and installing a free app from the Google Play store.

chompSMS

  • Press "Home," and then tap "Applications." Tap the "Play Store" icon, and then tap the "Search" icon. Enter "chompSMS" into the search box, and then tap "Search."

  • Tap "chompSMS" in the search results screen, and then tap "Accept & Download." Wait a few seconds for the chomp SMS app to download and install on your Motorola Photon phone automatically.

  • Press "Home" again, and then tap "Applications." Tap "All Apps," and then scroll to and tap "chompSMS."

  • Press the "Menu" button, and then tap "Settings." Tap "Customize Look," and then select "Conversation."

  • Tap the "Application" tab at the bottom of the Conversation screen, and slide it upward to display the customization menu.

  • Tap the "Outgoing Bubble Color" option, and then use the Red, Blue and Green slider controls to adjust the background color of the text bubble for messages you send to others. Tap the down-arrow on the Application tab after you select the color you want to use for your outgoing message bubbles.

  • Tap "Incoming Bubble Color," and then use the slider controls to adjust the color of message bubbles for texts that others send to you. After you change the color settings, all of the conversations in your messaging app will use the selected colors for incoming and outgoing text messages.

GO SMS Pro

  • Open Google Play, search for "GO SMS Pro," and then install the free app on your Motorola Photon.

  • Press the "Home" button, and then tap the "GO SMS" icon. Choose the message box style you want to use for your SMS messages. The choices are "Bubble Style" or "List Style." Once you have selected the style, tap "Enter GO SMS."

  • Tap the "Menu" icon at the top of the GO SMS message list window, and then select "Settings." Tap the "Advanced" tab.

  • Tap "Appearance Settings," and then select "Conversation Customization." Tap "Incoming Background Color," and then select "Color." Use the slider controls to adjust the background color of text messages that you receive, and then tap the down-arrow on the Application bar.

  • Select "Outgoing Background Color," tap "Color," and then use the sliders to adjust the color of the bubbles or boxes of incoming SMS messages.

  • Press "Home" to return to the Home screen. Tap "GO SMS," and send or view messages as you normally would.

Handcent SMS

  • Press "Home," and tap "Google Play." Download and install "Handcent SMS" to your Photon phone.

  • Press the "Home" button, and then tap "Handcent SMS." Tap the "Menu" icon, and then tap "Settings."

  • Tap "Conversation Settings" under the Custom Style header on the Settings menu.

  • Tap "Bubble Settings," and then select "Incoming Messages." Use the slider controls to set the color you want to use for incoming text messages, and then click the drop-down arrow on the Application bar.

  • Tap "Outgoing Messages," and then adjust the background color for messages you send.

  • Press "Home," and then tap "Handcent SMS" to send text messages as you normally would.

Tips & Warnings

  • The above apps also allow you to customize virtually all other appearance aspects of message boxes or bubbles as well. For instance, you can select themes for your conversations, add background images or even change the display fonts for your messages.
