How to Block Gmail Chat on a Computer

If you use Gmail, it's convenient to chat with contacts directly from your inbox. Sometimes, though, chatting turns into a distraction that keeps you from work or other tasks. If you're annoyed by conversation requests from your Gmail contacts, you may want to disable Chat temporarily or permanently. You can also block Gmail Chat for all computers connected to your home or office networks. To do this, you'll need admin access to your network router.

Disable Chat in Gmail

  • Go to Gmail and sign in to your account.

  • Click the gear icon below your name at the top of the page. Select "Settings."

  • Click on "Chat," then select "Chat Off." Click "Save Changes" to disable chat. If you're currently signed in to Chat, doing this will automatically end all conversations and sign you out.

Block Chat for Your Network

  • Open a Web browser and type your router's IP address into the address bar. The address differs depending on your router's model. You can find the IP address in your router's instruction manual, or it might be printed on the back or side of the device itself. Type "ipconfig" (without quotes) in the window that opens. Press "Enter." Scroll to the top of the window. The number next to the Default Gateway field is your router's IP address.

  • Enter your router username and password. If you haven't changed these credentials, the username is typically "admin" (without quotes). Many routers don't ship with a password, so if you didn't set one, leave the Password field blank. Click "Log In" or "Sign In."

  • Click on the router's Access Restrictions page or website-blocking option.

  • Enter "" (without quotes) into the blocked websites list.
