Windows Phone lets you retrieve your contacts from your Outlook address book. However, if you want to switch to Windows Phone from another smartphone platform that cannot sync your old phone contacts to your Outlook address book, the feature doesn't do you much good. If you have your contacts stored in your SIM card, though, you can quickly transfer them to your Windows Phone without worrying about synchronization.
Switch off the phone and insert the SIM card containing the contacts you wish to transfer to your Windows Phone device if you haven't done so yet. The exact procedure may vary depending on the device, so consult the user's manual if you have difficulty. Switch on the phone afterwards.
Tap the "Start" button on the phone and tap "People." Tap the "More" button (the icon with 3 dots) and go to "Settings." Tap "Import SIM Contacts" to proceed.
Tap "Import" to transfer all of your SIM card contacts to your phone.
If you want to transfer certain contacts from your SIM card to the phone memory, tap the "Clear" button and select contacts individually before tapping the "Import" button.
Tips & Warnings
- If the Import SIM contacts setting is disabled, the phone could be transferring the SIM card contacts to your phone. Simply wait a few minutes and check your contacts after. This option will also be disabled if you do not have any contacts stored in your SIM card. To determine if the SIM card is really empty, you must insert the SIM card in another phone running a different operating system such as Android that supports the viewing of SIM card contacts.
