How to Tether the Optimus S to a Computer

If you need to connect to the Internet from your computer, but can't find a public network within range, wirelessly tether your LG Optimus S to your PC and share its data connection. The smartphone acts like an access point, broadcasting a wireless signal to devices in the vicinity and allowing up to eight simultaneous connections at once. The mobile hot spot is unsecured by default, but you can set up Wi-Fi Protected Access on the phone to password-protect the network.

  • Press the "Menu" key from the Home screen and then touch "Settings."

  • Touch "Wireless & Networks," then "Portable Hotspot." Tap "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot" to place a check mark in the box and then press "OK" to confirm.

  • Touch "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot Settings," then "Configure Wi-Fi Hotspot." Tap inside the "Network SSID" field and enter a new network name, or use the default.

  • Choose "Open" to allow anyone to connect to the hot spot or choose "WPA2 PSK" to password-protect your network.

  • Enter a password consisting of eight to 63 characters into the "Password" field and touch "Save."

  • Press the "Windows" key to go to the desktop in Windows, then click the signal bar in the system tray to expand the Networks pane.

  • Choose your mobile hot spot and then click "Connect." Enter your password and then click "Connect" again, if applicable.
