How to Customize Different Types of Fabulous Fourth of July Cakes


A sheet cake with white icing, rows of sliced strawberries and a cluster of blueberries for stars makes a fabulous Fourth of July cake, as does a cake iced with red, white and blue frosting. But don't let your creativity stop there. Both sheet cakes and layer cakes need texture, height and bright color to be even more fabulous. For the cake itself, create a surprise on the inside of a layer cake by creating a four-layer flag pattern with the batter. For the outside surface of a cake, rely on big, bold graphics and bright colors.

Things You'll Need

  • Red and blue food coloring
  • Three 9-inch cake pans
  • Serrated knife
  • 5-inch paper circle
  • Red, white and blue candy sprinkles
  • Toothpick flags
  • Red and blue candles
  • Paper star pattern
  • Raspberries, strawberries and blueberries
  • White icing
  • One tube of white icing
  • Foil sparklers

Inside the Cake

  • Separate white cake batter into three pans. Using commercial food coloring, make one pan of batter red and one blue by stirring the food coloring into the batter.

  • Slice the red and white layers horizontally after the cake has cooled completely, setting aside one red and one white layer after cutting, and leaving the blue layer intact. Cut 5-inch-diameter circles in the remaining layers, discarding the inner blue circle and outer rings of the red and white layers.

  • Lay the white cake layer that you set aside on a plate. Frost it, place a red layer on top and frost that too. Then, place the blue layer with its inner ring removed on top and frost the exposed edges. Insert a white layer inner ring in the center of the blue ring, add more frosting and end with the red inner circle on top.

  • Frost the entire cake with white icing. Decorate the cake lavishly with red and blue sprinkles, toothpick flags and red and blue candles.

The Outside

  • Frost a cake with white icing. Cut a five-sided star pattern as a paper template to trace with a toothpick in the icing on top of the cake. Fill in the star outline with red raspberries and place a burst of sliced strawberries in the center of the star. Fill the space outside the star with blueberries. Sprinkle the top with red- and blue-colored sprinkles

  • Separate white icing into three bowls and color two of them, one each with red and then blue food coloring. Ice the top third of a sheet cake with red and white stripes with a blue border underneath for Uncle Sam's top hat. Sprinkle red, white and blue sprinkles on top of the colors to make them pop and draw stars across the blue border with a tube of white icing.

  • Decorate a two- or three-layer tiered cake with icing and sprinkles to resemble draped bunting and array tall, foil sparklers from a party store on top and protruding from the inner edges where the tiers meet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Partially freeze the flag cake's colored layers to make cutting easier.
  • Use paste food coloring for deeper shades of red and blue when making icing.
  • Intricate icing designs, such as Uncle Sam's face, are hard to pull off without making your cake look amateurish.
