Dark or discolored patches on the skin can crop up quickly for a number of reasons, but in many cases, uneven skin tone is reversible. External factors, like exposure to the sun, and internal factors, like dehydration, can trigger hyper-pigmentation, which affect the tones of your skin. You need a two-prong approach to this type of skin problem: one that stops further discoloration and another to lighten uneven areas. Correcting this problem may take weeks or months, and in some cases, you may need the help of a dermatologist.

Things You'll Need

  • Cleanser with exfoliating beads
  • Towel
  • Skin lightener
  • Glycolic face treatment
  • Moisturizer
  • Sunscreen

Wash the skin with a cleanser that contains exfoliating beads. By exfoliating, you slough away some of the discoloration. Scrub for no more than one minute, then rinse the area clean with cool water. If you notice skin peeling or flaking, do not scrub the skin. Seek the help of a dermatologist.

Pat the skin dry with a soft towel. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the skin with the towel. After exfoliation, the skin may appear red and feel sensitive.

Apply a topical skin bleaching product to the dark spot. Products that bleach the skin often contain hydroquinone, an active ingredient that lightens dark skin. Use the product sparingly, dabbing it on the spot only. An all-over skin application is not recommended.

Try at-home glycolic face peel products monthly. Opt for glycolic face pads that you rub over the uneven skin. This type of product corrects tones and reduces fine wrinkles.

Moisturize the skin regularly to keep it supple and strong. Hydration can help the skin heal more quickly.

Massage sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide or zinc dioxide into the skin regularly, especially when you anticipate stepping out into the sun for long periods of time.
