Part of the fun of snowshoeing is getting to make your own trail through mountains, woods or fields. Snowshoers call this breaking trail.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hiking Boots
  • Ski Hats
  • Warm Clothes
  • Ski Gloves
  • Ski Poles
  • Snowshoes
  1. Step 1

Grab a friend or group of friends and meet up for a trek.

  2. Step 2

Determine if the snow is wet, dry, soft or firm.

  3. Step 3

Take long steps through deep, dry powder. Long steps will allow you to clear your previous footprint instead of sinking down into it.

  4. Step 4

Take short steps through firmer, wet snow.

  5. Step 5

Lift your feet higher than a normal walking step. This is because you will sink into the snow at least a little bit.

  6. Step 6

Rotate to the back of the line when tired and enjoy watching your friends break trail.

  7. Step 7

Follow your trail backwards to get back to the place you started.

Tips & Warnings
  • You will probably sink down into the snow a few inches when breaking trail, causing you to be slower than normal while snowshoeing.
  • If it is snowing or threatening to snow, place markers along your trail to find the way home.
