Unless your wig is part of a clown's costume, you want it to fit snugly and appear natural when you wear it. If you purchase a wig that is slightly large you may need to shrink it to achieve a good fit. In some cases, you may able to tighten the wig cap by adjusting the band or by washing the wig a certain way. For the best possible fit, measure your head before you purchase a wig, and buy a hairpiece that closely matches your measurements.

Things You'll Need

  • Comfort liner
  • Warm water
  • Towel
  • Wig stand

Look inside the wig for an adjustable strap. Many lace wigs have adjustable straps that allow you to tighten or loosen the fit.

Pull on the strap to cinch the wig and make it shrink.

Place the wig on your head to test the fit. Remove the wig and adjust the strap until you get the look you want.

Wrap your head with a comfort liner. Liners add volume to the head's circumference and may help a loose wig fit better. Put on your wig, adjusting it for fit.

Soak the wig in clean, warm water for an hour to shrink it slightly. Remove the wig from the water and roll it gently in a towel. Allow the wig to air dry, placing it on a wig stand for shaping.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take your wig to a professional wig shop for additional adjustment.
