    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Epoxy
    • Felt-tip Pens
    • Telemark Ski Equipment
    • Drill Bits
    • Rulers
    • Safety Goggles
    • Variable-speed Drills
      • 1

Find the midpoint of your skis and telemark boots. Both should be marked by the manufacturer; otherwise, measure the halfway point of each with a ruler.

      • 2

Place the loose toe plate of one binding onto a boot and secure the two together.

      • 3

Place the midpoint of the boot with the binding attached on top of the midpoint of a ski.

      • 4

Hold the binding steady, and use a felt-tip pen to mark the screw hole spots onto the ski.

      • 5

Take the boot and binding off, and use a ruler to make sure the marks are centered along the width of the ski.

      • 6

Find a drill bit that has a diameter of about 3/64 inch smaller than the binding screw. This will allow the screw to bite into the ski when screwed in.

      • 7

Drill into the ski on the marks, making sure to drill only halfway through the ski.

      • 8

Fill the holes with epoxy or a similar adhesive, and quickly screw the toe piece of the binding into place.

      • 9

Place the boot into the toe piece and mark where the edge of the boot strikes the ski. This mark will be the farthest point that the heel plate extends back.

      • 10

Center the heel plate across the width of the ski, drill the holes, fill them with epoxy and screw the heel plate on.

      • 11

        Repeat on the other ski.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Many ski stores have a tool called a jig that has adjustable holes to match the binding screw holes. This can be placed on top of the ski to drill all the holes at once. Jigs are usually not for sale, but ask if you can borrow one.

    • Some telemark bindings are designed to be mounted at an angle. Check the instructions and adjust for this.

    • Always wear protective eye covering when using a drill.

I have never mounted Telemark bindings myself. But I sure have skied on them a lot. Just in front of where the boot flexes, at the three-pin line is where the center of the ski should be. Because the three-pin line or toe bail is energy transfer point, unlike alpine bindings where there is power transfer through the toe and heel.

Use a piece of rubber hose that just fits over the drill bit. Cut and place it over the bit so that the drill protrudes only to the desired hole depth. This will keep you from drilling too deep.
