Once you obtain the basic telemark gear of skis, boots, bindings and poles, you might consider a few extras for your safety and enjoyment.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gaiters
  • Kneepads
  • Ski Clothing
  • Telemark Ski Equipment
  • Telemark Ski Retaining Straps
  • Telemark Ski Skins
  • Kneepads
  1. Step 1

Buy a pair of kneepads to protect those dropped knees from stray stones (do this once and you'll understand). A pair that fits under ski pants provides the most maneuverability.

  2. Step 2

Select a clothing system to use as you would for Alpine skiing or other winter activities. This includes a waterproof outer layer, warm middle layer, polypropelene underwear, socks, gloves and a hat.

  3. Step 3

Consider buying gaiters to attach from your boots to below your knees. These will keep snow out of your boots.

  4. Step 4

Get a pair of sunglasses or goggles to protect your eyes from sun, wind and snow.

  5. Step 5

Keep yourself hydrated with a backpack hydration system. Many companies make special hydration systems to fit under a coat while skiing.

  6. Step 6

Buy some skins to climb uphill if you are planning on going off-piste.

  7. Step 7

Buy a pair of ski-retaining straps to prevent runaway skis at resorts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ski-retaining straps are required at resorts.
