How to Add a Waypoint in a Garmin eTrex

Save

When you're using a hand-held Garmin eTrex personal GPS device to help you navigate while hiking, you can keep track of the places you go by adding waypoints. A waypoint is a saved location along the trail you're walking, which is useful for finding places of interest that you want to revisit or writing notes about a particular area. You can add a waypoint while you're walking with the Garmin eTrex, or call up recent places on a map to add waypoints after you’ve visited them.

Current Location

  • Power on the Garmin eTrex.

  • Press and hold the “Enter” button to bring up the Mark Waypoint menu.

  • Press the rocker key to select “OK,” and then press the “Enter” button to accept the waypoint with the default information, which includes the location, time and date and a field for notes. Alternately, press the rocker key to navigate to a data field, and then press the “Enter” button to open the on-screen keypad. For example, type some text in the Note field, such as “Place to have a picnic.” Select “OK” when you finish typing in your information, and then press the “Enter” button to save it.

Location From Map Page

  • Press the “Menu/Find” button twice to see the main menu.

  • Press the “Quit/Page” button repeatedly until you see the Map Page menu. A detailed map appears for the area around your current location.

  • Press the rocker key to move the on-screen pointer to the location on the map you wish to mark with a waypoint.

  • Press the “Enter” button and quickly release it to select the location as a waypoint. Press the rocker key to select “Save,” and then press the “Enter” button to save the location as a waypoint. If no information is available for this location, the message “No Map Information at This Point. Do You Want to Create a User Waypoint Here?” will appear. Press the rocker key to select “Yes,” and then press the “Enter” button. Press the rocker key to navigate to a data field if you want to add additional information about the waypoint, type it in with the on-screen keypad, and then select “OK" and press “Enter.”
