How to Reset an XM Radio to Re-Subscribe

XM Radio is a service that broadcasts music and talk shows over a satellite signal. Unlike traditional radio, an XM station can be continuously heard anywhere in the United States. An XM radio may sometimes need to be refreshed. This is necessary when a radio is associated with a new subscription, or if the device is not functioning properly. Either a computer or a phone can be used to reset the radio.

Using the Internet

  • Move the vehicle equipped with XM to an outside location. Ensure that the XM radio antenna has a clear view of the sky and is unobstructed by a garage or other obstacles.

  • Start the vehicle and turn on the XM radio. Tune the radio to "Channel 0." Note the radio ID number listed on this channel.

  • Adjust the XM radio to "Channel 1." Alternately, tune to "Channel 184" if the radio is a Sirius brand device.

  • Load the radio activation tool on the SiriusXM website. (A direct link is listed in the Resources section.)

  • Enter the radio identification numbers and click "Send Activation Request." The radio will receive a satellite signal and reset within five minutes.

Using a Phone

  • Ensure that the XM radio antenna has a clear view to the sky. Dial the automated XM activation system at 855-MY-REFRESH (697-3373).

  • Enter the radio ID number when prompted. If you do not have this information, tune the XM radio to "Channel 0" to view the number.

  • Listen to the instructions from the phone activation system to complete the process. The radio will receive a refresh signal within five minutes.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can verify that an XM radio has been properly reset. Tune to "Channel 3." If you hear audio, the system has refreshed properly.
