How to Blacklist on an iPhone

While there are blacklist apps available if you jailbreak your iPhone, there are no such apps available in the Apple App Store. There's no reason to jailbreak your iPhone just to blacklist unwanted calls and text messages. You can blacklist any number yourself simply by creating a new "Blacklist" contact and assigning it a silent ringtone and turning off alerts for that number. All you need is a silent ringtone, which costs a little more than $1 from the App Store.

Buy a Silent Ringtone

  • Turn on your iPhone and open the "iTunes" app. Tap "Search" and start typing "silent ringtone." As you type, a list of search suggestions appears.

  • Select "silent ringtone" when it appears in the list. A list of silent ringtones appears in the Ringtones section at the top of the screen.

  • Purchase a silent ringtone by tapping the button that displays the price. Apple charges the credit card registered with your Apple ID and sends you a receipt within a few days.

Create a Blacklist Contact

  • Open the "Phone" app and tap the "Recents" button. Names and numbers are listed by date. Select a number you want to blacklist by tapping the blue "Arrow" button beside the date. The caller's history is displayed.

  • Tap the "Create New Contact" button. Tap the "First" name field and type "Blacklist" or any expletives you may find amusing. This will identify the call as coming from "Blacklist" the next time you receive a call from that number.

  • Tap the "Ringtone" button and then select the "Silent Ringtone." Tap "Save."

  • Tap the "Vibration" button. Scroll down and select "None." Tap "Save." Select the "Text Tone" option and select "None." Then select the text tone "Vibration" option and select "None" as well.

  • Tap "Save" and "Done." The next time someone calls from this number, the iPhone will not ring or vibrate. The word "Blacklist" will appear on the screen.

Blacklist Additional Numbers

  • Tap the "Recents" button in the Phone app and select any other number you want to blacklist.

  • Scroll down and select "Add to Existing Contact."

  • Select your "Blacklist" contact. The number is assigned to your Blacklist. When you run out of numbers, create as many additional contacts as needed, like "Blacklist2," "Blacklist3."
