The words on a Kindle can run in any of four directions. If you hold the device horizontally, the screen must use landscape mode, and the Kindle's buttons can run along the device's left or right side. If you hold the device vertically, the screen must use portrait mode, and the Kindle's buttons can run along the device's top or bottom side. A horizontal orientation resembles an open book, but you may prefer a vertical orientation, which looks like a single open page.
Press the Text key, which is to the right of the space bar, to open the Text menu.
Press the bottom of the 5-way navigation key to highlight the Screen Rotation pane.
Press the left side of the 5-way navigation key to highlight the first of the rotation options, which uses a vertical orientation.
Press the center of the 5-way navigation key to switch from horizontal to vertical mode.
Tips & Warnings
- You can also rotate your screen by physically rotating your device, but your Kindle doesn't always respond effectively to this.
- You have to switch to vertical mode whenever you browse the Kindle store, which doesn't support landscape.
