How to Use KORGs With an IPad

Setting up virtual instruments on your iPad turns the tablet computer into a powerful music creation device. IPolysix, iELECTRIBE and iKaossilator are three music creation and production applications developed by KORG. The iPolysix is a virtual polyphonic synthesizer and drum machine. The iELECTRIBE is a rhythm synthesizer. The iKaossilator is a touch-sensitive synthesizer. All three applications are downloaded and installed in the same way from the iTunes Store. Once they are installed, however, how you go about using the applications varies significantly.

IPolysix

  • Tap the "KORG iPolysix" icon on the iPad's Home screen to launch the application.

  • Tap the "Synth" button on the top of the main iPolysix window to load the synthesizer. Press the virtual synthesizer keys to create sounds. Tap the "KAOSS PAD (KEYBOARD)" button to switch back and forth between the performance keyboard and Kaoss pads. Tap a sound name in the upper-right corner to access the Sound List. Tap the sound you want to use and then tap "OK." Twist the virtual "WAVEFORM" knob to select the synthesizer's waveform. Twist the virtual "OCTAVE" knob to adjust the pitch. Manipulate the "High-Pass" and "Low-Pass" filters to adjust the thickness and mellowness of the sound.

  • Tap the "Drums" button on the top of the main iPolysix window to load the drum machine. Tap any of the six provided drum pads to select that pad. Tap the step switches to create a drum pattern. Tap the "Sub-Bar" switch to load the drum editor. Tap "EDIT MODE 'SYN'" and then tap the drum part you want to edit. Edit the sound using the provided tools. When you're finished, tap "STEPS" to return to the main drum machine window.

IELECTRIBE

  • Tap the "KORG iELECTRIBE" icon on the iPad's Home screen to launch the application.

  • Twist the dial at the top of the app to select a rhythm pattern.

  • Tap the "Synth" buttons to audition individual sounds within each pattern.

  • Adjust the virtual "Effect" and "Oscillator" knobs and parameters to edit the selected sound or pattern.

  • Tap the "Step" button to modify the rhythm pattern.

  • Tap the "Record" button to record your performance. Tap "Play" to play back the recorded performance and "Stop" to stop it.

  • Tap the "Write" button to save your pattern or performance.

IKaossilator

  • Tap the "KORG iKaossilator" icon on the iPad's Home screen to launch the application.

  • Flick a "Part" button downward or upward to mute or enable that part.

  • Tap the "Loop List" icon to load the Loop list. Tap a loop number to load that loop into the main workspace. Tap a part within a loop to mix it with other parts from other loops.

  • Press and slide your fingers around the workspace to manipulate the touch-sensitive oscillator.
