How to Load IMG Maps Into a Garmin Nuvi

The Garmin Nuvi offers people a portable way to avoid getting lost in unfamiliar areas. In addition to the GPS-powered maps and directions that are already included on the Nuvi, you can also download routes and maps from the Internet and transfer them to your device. However, before you can use the map on the Nuvi, you must first ensure it can recognize the file.

  • Connect the device to your computer via the USB cable. The computer should automatically detect it as removable media and display the contents of the Garmin's internal memory and SD card as folders. If it does not, tap the "Setup" icon on the Garmin's main menu, select "Interface" and tap the "USB Mass Storage" option.

  • Locate the IMG map file on your computer. Right-click the file and select "Copy" from the menu that appears.

  • Navigate to the "Garmin" folder and paste the IMG map inside. This ensures the Nuvi will recognize the file.

  • Turn off the Nuvi and remove the USB cord. Restart the device. The map should appear under "View Map" on the menu screen.
